A major security sweep across the Coast region has led to the arrest of 17 suspects linked to armed robbery, drug trafficking and violent land invasions, as authorities move to contain what they describe as a worrying rise in crime.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the National Police Service said the suspects were rounded up during a focused operation targeting emerging security threats, with particular attention on Kilifi County. The crackdown followed reports of increased criminal activity that has unsettled residents and affected daily life.
According to police, the area has witnessed “a rise in criminal activities, including armed robbery, burglary, drug trafficking and the violent encroachment of private land by armed gangs,” incidents that have “caused concern among residents and disrupted the sense of security within communities.”
During the operation, officers recovered an AK47 rifle, a magazine and twelve rounds of ammunition. More than 35 kilograms of suspected narcotics were also seized, including bhang, heroin and cocaine. Investigators further confiscated over 40 mobile phones and SIM cards believed to have been used to plan and coordinate criminal acts.
Security teams also collected several crude weapons such as clubs and machetes. In addition, government stores were found in the suspects’ possession, including police uniforms and other items that are now part of ongoing investigations.
The NPS attributed the success of the operation to “intelligence-led strategies, increased patrols, enhanced surveillance, strategic deployments and close multi-agency collaboration” carried out across the Coast region.
Authorities say the security exercise is still underway, with more patrols being conducted in identified hotspots and intelligence teams continuing to monitor activities to prevent further incidents. The 17 suspects remain in custody and are expected to be presented before court.
Reaffirming its resolve, the NPS stated it “remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, protecting communities and upholding the rule of law across the Coast region.”
Police have appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities.
